Jan Berteling, former IWBF Europe President, wins the Rob Verheuvel Award

Almere, the Netherlands

Edwin Wallaart, IWBF Europe Technical Commission Chairman, presented the Rob Verheuvel Award to Jan Berteling, former IWBF Europe President. Berteling received the award at the TOTO Basketball Cup Final in Almere, the Netherlands.

“What made Jan a good administrator is that he did not work from an ivory tower but was always in touch with the people for whom he did it all. He always kept both feet on the ground. His attitude was, and still is, ‘Just act normal, you’ll be crazy enough’. As far as I’m concerned, that does him enormous credit.” said Edwin Wallart.

The Rob Verheuvel award is given annually to someone (or a group of individuals) who has or have shown exceptional dedication to the sport of wheelchair basketball. A list of previous winners can be found on the website of the Netherland Basketball Federation (Basketball Nederland).

Berteling’s career in the wheelchair basketball world took place both internationally and within its own borders: IWBF Europe president from 1999 to 2015 and former IWBF board member, played a crucial role in the growth of wheelchair basket to be become the most popular among Paralympic team sports.
