28th European Championship for Men and the 20th European Championship for Women – division A awarded to British Wheelchair Basketball

The European Championships – division A will be held again in Great Britain for the first time since 2015

IWBF Europe is happy to announce that the 28th European Championship for Men and the 20th European Championship for Women – division A has been awarded to the British Wheelchair Basketball. The competition will be hosted as a combined event in the vibrant city of Liverpool.

Taking place between 11-19 September 2027 at the iconic M&S Bank Arena along Liverpool’s lively waterfront, the event is set to showcase the world’s best athletes who redefine what it means to be powerful, skilled, and relentless whilst providing a platform to change societal narratives around disability. Fans will experience adrenaline-charged fixtures where tactical brilliance meets fierce physicality. The 2027 European Championships for Men and Women – division A serve as a direct qualifying opportunity for the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles for European nations.

Following the 2026 European Championship for Men – division B, that took place last week in Zagreb, Croatia, the stage is set for the Men competition. 12 teams will be competing for the European crown: current champions Spain, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Türkiye, Poland, the Netherlands, France, Austria, Switzerland, Israel and Slovenia

6 National Teams are planned for the Women’s competition: current champions the Netherlands, Great Britain, Spain, Germany, France and the top team from the 2026 European Championship for Women – division B. More information on the Women division B will be published this week!
