Peter Richarz Steps Down as U23 Head Coach
Time to pass the baton to the next generation of coaches
Peter Richarz led “his boys” to two world championships and won gold at the European Championships just as many times. Now Peter Richarz, the successful coach of the U23 national team with a total of seven international medals to his name, has announced his departure.
“The nearly twenty years I spent with Germany’s young players were an indescribable journey for me, filled with countless positive impressions and experiences,” says the Dortmund native, looking back gratefully on his time as head coach. Winning the World Cup title in São Paulo last year, with its dramatic final against Turkey, will remain in his and his team’s memories for a long time to come.
But now it is time to hand over the reins to the next generation of coaches, Richarz explained, giving the reason for his decision. He will continue to coach the junior team until the end of the year—with the European Championship as the highlight—together with the two new assistant coaches Sebastian Wolk and Alireza Ahmadi, who are succeeding Günter Mayer, who has been promoted to assistant coach of the senior national team.
Peter’s influence extends far beyond sporting success – he has developed people and given the youth sector a strong foundation. Developing young players and enabling them to make the transition to the men’s team has always been a particular concern for Richarz.
